Those helpful souls at Ethical Consumer Magazine have put together a really useful online guide to having an ethical Christmas.
The guide covers the best highstreet shops to choose (would you have guessed that WH Smith was a good ethical choice?), online shopping (especially alternatives to Amazon), and non-shopping ideas, such as homemade gifts, giving experiences rather than things, and just saying “no presents thanks, I’ve got everything I need”.
I went for the “strictly no presents for me” approach over 10 years ago, and I highly recommend it, though it can take a couple of years to reinforce the message and get people to stick to it.
I really love Christmas – singing songs, seeing family, eating nice food, and it really is all the better without the guilt and annoyance of unnecessary presents.
